Interfaith Council statement on the crisis in Egypt.

“The members of the Board of the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County are deeply concerned about the situation in Egypt, particularly the high numbers of casualties resulting from the police attacks against peaceful civilian demonstrators.  We are also concerned at the number of vandalisms and violence being directed toward Coptic Christian communities there.

According to the latest reports hundreds of people have been killed and thousands have been injured.  We urge the U.S. Government to be a peacemaker during this time and to use every peaceful means at its disposal to encourage an end to the violence and loss of life and urge the Administration to persuade the United Nations to take measures to end the violence and chaos.  We call on the Egyptian police to end its repression, but we also call upon all people of faith and good will to end sectarian violence against one another as we are hearing that the violence is also being perpetrated by citizens against one another.

As people of faith, we stand for the preciousness of all human life and call for the cessation of violence against any and all communities in Egypt and encourage people to live into their highest religious and philosophical values.  Our prayer is that a truly democratic, inclusive and understanding Egypt that protects the religious rights of all of her citizens emerge from this time of conflict.”
